The first and chief test of whether or not we are a servant is if we're willing to be treated like one. Jesus put it like this: “So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty’” (Luke 17:10).
The second test is the question we ask ourselves when confronted with a decision or opportunity. A servant isn't asking, "What do I want?" Rather, a servant is asking, "What does the Master need?"
Getting this right is only possible by making a full, total, complete surrender of our lives to the Lordship of Jesus, and to do so every day.
"Lord, I surrender. I want to be willing to be treated like a servant. Put in my heart the desire to go wherever you would go, to do whatever you would do. Not from guilt or to gain merit or to win my freedom or your approval, but as a response to your great love for me. Today I will not ask, 'What do I want?' Instead, I ask, 'What does the Master need?' In the name of Jesus, amen."
