The idea of God is obvious. Through "general revelation" (nature) "God's invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made" (Romans 1:20). But there is nothing in nature that even remotely suggests the possibility of eternal life. So where did the idea of salvation come from? Salvation is God's idea--not man's, and the only way we know about it is through "special revelation" (Scripture). Nature helps us understand that there is a God, but only Scripture tells us that we don't have to die.
