The Short Shelf Life of Fame

Our daughter and I went to the U.S. Open tennis tournament. Before the women’s championship final, they introduced the great women champions of yesteryear, starting with the oldest. There were a few polite claps. As each former star was introduced, the applause picked up a little. By the time they called Chris Evert’s name the stands thundered approval!

As I sat observing this, I wondered how many years it would be before Chris Evert was only getting a few polite claps from a handful of courteous fans. To answer the question “Who am I?” in terms of our fame and worldly accomplishment is to select an identity that will soon fade away.
