Last weekend I had the privilege of speaking to an impressive assembly of urban pastors and leaders in Chicago’s southside about “The Urgent Necessity to Disciple Men.” The Leading Men Conference was planned and executed by Greg Wilkerson, our local Man in the Mirror Area Director there. The vision is for every church on the southside of Chicago to disciple every man who lives there.
It was a day I will never forget. Greg is a phenomenon among the young black men he mentors. Whether it’s an aspiring Christian rapper, professional wrestler, schoolteacher, or high school student with a business idea, Greg gets involved in men’s lives. He showers them with the love of Jesus, then encourages then to do something great with their lives for the glory of God.
Greg’s latest project? Taking young black men to church. Please be encouraged by and pray for this bold initiative which is inspiring many of the young men Greg has mentored.
Here’s how Greg puts it…
“I challenge every man to make November 23, 2014, Take a Young Black Male To Church Sunday. The Black Star Project asked me to lead the campaign. I am looking forward to your church registering at www.blackstarproject.org, which will be launched this Tuesday.
“The Black Star Project is asking everyone in America, from elected officials to street organization leaders, from parents to social workers, from priests and pastors to policemen and corrections officers, to participate. Jackson says, ‘The three most powerful institutions in the Black community are the church, popular media and street organizations (gangs). These institutions must come together to address the most pressing problem for Black males in America, which is the destruction and self-destruction of Black boys and young Black men.’
“Thank you and God bless you for your support.”
