God Helps Those Who Cannot Help Themselves

You’ve been down so long, you just can’t see a way out. Your preacher tells you everything is going to be okay. Your friends tell you to keep the faith. You read a book that tells you to hold on and not give up. But you have given up. This has just gone on for too long. You’ve lost hope. That’s what happened to the Israelites in the wilderness. “But they refused to listen anymore. They had become too discouraged…” (Exodus 6:9). People like to say that God helps those who help themselves. But the more common experience in Scripture is that God helps those who cannot help themselves. God delivered the Israelites not in spite of their discouragement, but because of it. Your preacher, your friends, and that book were right. At just the right time He will deliver you too. So do not grow weary and give up. Some would say clinging to hope in God is not a strategy, but they’d be wrong.
