The idea of God is obvious. Through “general revelation” (nature) “God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made” (Romans 1:20). But there is nothing in nature that even remotely suggests the possibility of eternal life. So where did the idea of salvation come from? Salvation is God’s idea–not man’s, and the only way we know about it is through “special revelation” (Scripture). Nature helps us understand that there is a God, but only Scripture tells us that we don’t have to die.
