“Religion Wore Me Out”

21 Jan 2024

I thought of another reason why men withdraw from God: PERFORMANCE FATIGUE. Mike, a father of four kids, said, “I put everything into it. I ushered and served on a committee in my church but then got tired of that. Religion wore me out, so I said, ‘I’ll just put that effort in at work.’ Now it’s ten years later, and I’m nowhere.” Let’s face it. We are immersed in a performance-based culture for all but a few hours each week. This can’t help but twist us into thinking that Christianity is also about performance: “If I can just be good enough then God will accept me, or at least not punish me.” Unfortunately, performance is never enough. You are only as good as how you perform the next time you’re up to bat, as Mike found out. Men, please don’t let this happen to you. Jesus did not say, “Come unto me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you more work to do.” You don’t have to perform to make God happy. He loves you because he made you.
