Imagine for a moment that you are God and you want to invite human beings to become part of your family, but there is no Bible and no Jesus. How would you communicate your desire and offer?
Here’s the thing. If we only had general revelation (creation), we could logically conclude there is a God (by whatever name, e.g., divine being). Famous atheist Anthony Flew came to that conclusion, in his own words, “by unaided human reason, not faith” at the age of 81.
But with general revelation alone, we would remain separated from knowing what God is like — his divine nature and attributes — by a chasm of ignorance and speculation.
Instead, he revealed his identity through special revelation (the word of God) to invite us to join his family, and the mediator of all this is Jesus. Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God, all of God in a human body, and the exact representation of God’s being (Colossians 1:15, 2:8, and Hebrews 1:3).
Can anyone come up with a better plan? Jesus has many critics, but no rivals. He is the single clearest communication God has ever offered. Jesus makes God’s word legible.
