Some suggest that America has become a post-Christian culture, a formerly Christian nation. 

However, most Americans still consider themselves Christians. Several polls show around 80 percent of Americans make the claim. About 45 percent of us indicate a “born again” experience.

Would a truly post-Christian culture make such claims? Post– means “after.” Post-Christian, then, implies “no longer” Christian. But that is hardly the case.

Yet something has changed. Our once dependable consensus of Judeo-Christian values is melting faster than an ice cream cone on the Fourth of July.

Lately, Christianity appears to be more prevalent than powerful.

For these reasons, and you can no doubt think of others, perhaps it would be more accurate to say that we live in a “pseudo” Christian culture. Let’s define a pseudo-Christian culture as a society that is Christian more by custom than conviction. This seems to be especially true in the Bible Belt where it’s good for business to be Christian.

From our ministry work we know that many men become part of a Christian church but don’t really know what’s going on. Although they pick up the lingo and are often regulars at church—and sometimes even pillars—many are too embarrassed to admit they don’t really get it. They only know enough about God to be disappointed with Him. 

In other words, they’ve never been discipled. 

While it may be important to understand how we got into this mess, of far greater importance is to understand how we get out.

So how has God provided to solve this problem? Making disciples is God’s officially designated way to release the power of His Gospel on this and every other problem we face. 

It would be a grave mistake to be angry with people who obviously want to identify themselves as Christians for not being able to disciple themselves. If anyone is to blame, it’s the “already” disciples who are not passing it on.  After all, we are not fully disciples until we are making other disciples. That’s where the bottleneck is today for advancing the Kingdom of Christ.

No matter how we became a pseudo-Christian nation, the only solution is to disciple our way out. God’s only plan is for those of us who have been discipled to turn around and disciple a few others.

 Men, it takes a man to teach a man how to be a man. So let’s each take a few other men under our wings and show them the ropes. You know, the way Jesus did it.
