The Essence of How To Live Like a Disciple of Jesus

23 Jan 2024

A disciple is someone “called” to live in Christ, “equipped” to live like Christ, and “sent” to live for Christ.

What does “sent” to live for Christ look like in practice?

God has four universal purposes for ALL disciples of Jesus….

  1. The First Commandment: To love God with all our heart, soul, mind, strength. Augustine once said, “Love God and do what you want.”

  2. The Second Commandment: To love our neighbor as ourselves. “The entire law is summed up in a single command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself'” (Galatians 5:14).

  3. The Great Commission: To build the kingdom. To become a disciple of Jesus, then make disciples who make disciples–starting at home. (“Disciples not making disciples” is an oxymoron).

  4. The Cultural Mandate: To tend the culture. To live out our faith in the “exact times and places where we live” (Acts 17:26), such as marriage, family, work, service, justice, art, government, and “working for the peace and prosperity” of where we live (Jeremiah 29:7).

While no two of us share the same circumstances, we do share these four ways to experience the love, peace, and joy of our salvation.

This is the essence of how disciples live.

Until every church disciples every man…
