“Act Like Men” Is Its Own Category

Reading The One Year Bible in the ESV this year. Just noticed something in 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 I’ve never seen before. (The English Standard Version, displayed in the movie War Room, is more “word for word” [literal] than the “thought for thought” translations).

Paul closes his letter, “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”

Obviously, these are admonitions to ALL believers. With one exception: “Act like men.”

The Greek word used for “men” is distinctly male, not oriented to all mankind.

The Holy Spirit inspired Paul to exclusively exhort all men everywhere: act like men!

To “act like men” is its own category–a world unto itself.

Sounds like the title for a great Bible study series or seminar. In fact, someone can no doubt extract a pretty good book out of that phrase!

Until every church disciples every man…
